LUCK

LUCK

I usually avoid sharing complicated poems online.
Only simple, crisp and easy to grasp content is what I share here.
But this time, I am breaking my rule.
Let's see what sort of response I get.
The poem is called 'LUCK' it's about how a man conquered it and felt he shouldn't have done it. Enjoy.

 LUCK

I cursed my luck like a hallucinating drunkard that day,
told her I hated her,
hated the fact that she hates me,
she got offended, she cried like a baby,
she told me,
'take off your skin, come out of your body,
fly swiftly with me, into the sky of aspirations,
dive smoothly with me, into the ocean of dreams.

for I will never exist if you ignore me while dreaming,
for my presence can be eliminated,
If you foresee every possibility,
anticipate every response,
and mold reality towards the desired outcome
I die a slow death.

You of all creatures I am scared of,
your wisdom is a weapon,
your vision hurts me,
makes me bleed.'
she spoke in rage and vanished...

I had a near death experience,
her name was Jesus,
after making sweet love to me she said-
'everyone cries for me, for I am a synonym of salvation'.
In my name, they feel good about bad they do.

I took a nap in her lap,
and told her, 'lemme sleep for some time,
lemme fly out of this body,
to someplace cold,
to that purgatory where my ancestors live,
for the choices they made.'

I am a monster for mankind,
and a savior for god,
exiting as if nobody knows I am gone,
into the abyss, going to find luck again....
her presence made life so much more meaningful,
something you can wake up to.
It gives hope to dwell upon.

Religion was way too mainstream, so I decided to go against the mass delusion.

Religion was way too mainstream, so I chose music and art over it.

God delusion for peace of mind, mental stability and retrieval of faith was getting way too old and way too common. If you really get a grasp of the concept, its all an illusion you need to create to harness the inner energy of so called 'God' trapped inside you only; untouched, pure and divine. Helps you in making choices, differentiate right from wrong. When you see the big picture it helps in construction of a society based on values of integrity, freedom and compassion.

Similar is the concept of pure music, the idea of true music is to be happy, and that of art is to enjoy the beauty and empathize, which is an integral part of a society which is free from scarcity and fear.

You need to be at peace with who you are to tap into that energy. Why can't we name it ourselves ? I call it by the name Kurt Cobain. The guy made some real good music, and hence should be remembered instead of believing in things that I am not sure do exist or not. You can call it by any name you like, chose a fancy name like i did or stick to default like my parents did, only if you really understand the reasoning behind it, completely.

I am not sure God exists just the exact way as it is defined in different ancients scripts that lay the foundation of different religions. Even if they do, the way they are defined, i am sure they won't mind me doing this gustakhi. ;)

Being someone who loves to write I always had a hunch, all these religious books are nothing but brilliant work of fiction by geniuses of their respective times, these stories that led to a paradigm shift were respected and approved by all to such an extent that they ended up being part of a mass delusion.

To give you a feel of the scenario as I see it, imagine 'Harry Potter' found buried by a civilization, and people were blinded by the brilliance of imagination, they start to worship Dumbledore, start making temples of Ron and Hermoine and no one objecting as it taught the good fundamentals of friendship, love and trust. Chances are I may be completely wrong about all this, I am just another ignorant fool trying to contemplate the mysterious way in which the universe behaves.

Kurt as God works just the same way for me as your regular God for you, say Rama the human incarnation of lord Vishnu of Hindu mythology, who was not perfect and had faults, doubted his innocent wife and threw her out of kingdom when she was pregnant.
God I chose is not perfect like every other human, he was a suicidal heroin addict junkie, but then again he did some amazing things in his life. Like taking the voice of an entire frustrated generation  to the world. Our modern world requires broad mindedness, a complete paradigm shift. The wonders that mankind has achieved so far were a collective effort of a lot of people and were a result of generations of work done and passed on for the next generations to carry it further. That's how we are. That is our religion, let no fundamentalist thinking hinder your thought pattern. Let no barrier of region, relegion or language interfere and create diffences amongst us.

Let your religion be serving humanity. Humans, the majestic, naturally caring and creative creatures, who are forced to believe that they are not worthy enough and if left on their own would resolve into chaos and violence and hence should be ruled by a self appointed elite.
Chose your God wisely.

So who is your God ? :)

"Myocardial Infarction"

This song,
I wrote few days ago....
I hope you guys enjoy it. It's called

"Myocardial Infarction"

Fefdo ke beech pade pade, machalta hai ye...
zindagi ke poker me, dhai chaal chalta hai ye....
ghanti ho dimaag ki, toh lup-dup lup-dup karta hai ye....
shakkar ki goli pe, cheeti jaisa palta hai ye....

Suraj aage, life jaage...

jaage jaage, sab hai bhaage....
udte hai sab, patang ban ke...
sabke peeche kacche dhaage....

Kacche dhaage kaat ke, kati patang sa udta hai ye......
Iski sunke, uski sunke, apne man ki karta hai ye....
zindagi ke poker me dhaai chaal chatla hai ye...
fefdo ke beech pade-pade machalta hai ye....

Kehne ko toh, hai ye chhota
Kamina hai ye, har baat dhokha

alarm band, chadar kheech, sota hai ye
sapne dekhe, fir chup-chup ke rota hai ye,

Fefdo ke beech pade pade, machalta hai ye...
zindagi ke poker me, dhai chaal chalta hai ye....
ghanti ho dimaag ki, toh lup-dup lup-dup karta hai ye....
shakkar ki goli pe, cheeti jaisa palta hai ye....

Kamina saala....

Lost

 LOST

Is this where I'm supposed to be?
I thought I could fly swift and free.
Caged, tortured and treated as captive
Days monotonous joys evasive.

World was fun when I was a kid,
cruel games they play, I took the bid,
tunes are piercing,  music is noise,
in midst of chaos I lost my voice.

 They scream they shout,they growl,
nauseous sounds, silent soul,
heart sinks, brain throbs hard,
newspapers are mourning cards,

Go to sleep, create your own reality,
the world is full of crazy people and their brutality,
Cat is now Saint, Dog is the new sinner,
watching helplessly as ethics and morals go thinner.

Is this where you are supposed to be..?

THEORY OF WORLD (18+ MATURE READERS ONLY)

The Sin Theory.
                                                                             By
                                                                           -Sudhanshu Saxena

For Mature readers only. I don't intend to disrespect any religion, any community or anyone in person. If unknowingly someone feels offended. I apologize.

The only difference between fiction and reality is, fiction is still believable. Love stories are far more complex in reality, there is more suspense and thrill to life than showcased, there are multiple villains and last but not the least, there is not a happy ending always. So enjoy fiction as much as you can, but trust me the day you start riding the roller coaster named Life; it's addictive. It's not scripted, good will not always win but rather the winning one will be termed as good.

Take world war for example. If Germany would have won the world war, whatever Hitler did would have been glorified in such a way that it would be termed as good and rest as evil. I have serious issues with the one who said winning is not everything. If you survive to tell your tale to others, you are a champion, else it’s up to the person who analyse your work (only if it’s worth that much) to categorize it the way he wants or up to the winner you lost to. He will surely spin it in a way that you will be the bad guy and the winner will get all the laurels.

If you succeed, whatever sins you commit in the process will go into exception column. Lord Rama defeated Ravan, now even if he throws his wife out doubting on her character that will still be justified saying it was Raj dharma (King's Duty). Now what Lord Rama did was clearly wrong but was somehow justified in Ramayan, I am sure there has to be an explanation for what Ravan did, but his part of the story is missing. This very thought sounds quite weird but if you think rationally you will agree. Winner gets to define good, his bad is justified and losers bad is a sin. This is my sin theory.

Hinduism talks about kindness but there is an exception for Lord Rama. How can lord Rama go after hunting a deer, just because Sita Ji wanted it, is beyond my level of understanding. Read the whole incident, there was never an attempt to capture the deer. There was just bow and arrows doing the talking. Casteism which was an integral part of Hinduism, a religion full of superiority complex stricken and arrogant Rajputs and Brahmins; but their god ate fruits pre-eaten by a lower caste. Someone cunningly defined castes and made everyone stick to it making it part of the code of conduct. Clearly they were profited with wealth and respect. Believers never argued, no one else did up till now and they enjoyed all the privileges. Some brainy guy took birth in lower caste; he turned everything in their favour. And now we find most of the IITians, Doctors, IAS, and Politicians with weird surnames thanks to SC/ST and OBC reservation system in India. We all know how well it has been justified in the constitution.

Lord Krishna waited till the very last moment for Dushasan to start ripping off Draupadi's saree before helping her out when he was right there watching all that happen. I fail to understand the logic behind all this. Harishchandra the great truthful king who went by the book all his life never lied and did nothing wrong went through so many miseries same with the poor Brahmin Sudama. It's again somehow justified by saying they had to suffer their share of sufferings and were healed later also they were at peace in the afterlife (I am again not sure whether it exists) there are many more examples I don’t feel like putting here, you already know them. My point is Don't go by the book. It's all a very dynamic concept and changes with the distribution of power. Mighty is always right. Uproot the mighty, sit in his place and redefine everything.

So, this article of mine, might make many so called 'believers' furious, they will forcefully argue and fight for what they think is right, I’d rather dare say what has been embedded in their minds as right, but believers are spineless anyways, like a trained pet they obey and follow rituals that they don’t even understand, so I don’t care. Please don’t argue, I don’t care what rocket science you apply. It’s up to you to decide what is wrong and what is right, all I say is do some rethinking; it’s my strong opinion there is nothing like sin. Murders can be justified, and even charity is sometimes questionable. This world works in a mysterious way. It’s all up to you how you interpret its mechanism and how you adapt to it accordingly. The universe does not care about your logic, it has one of its own and it will go by it always. There is nothing like destiny and there is nothing like luck, no superpower exists. We have built all these hallucinations around us to soothe ourselves.

Let reasoning be the driving force, let rational thinking rule you rather than some absurd logic you inherit. Question the mighty and you will discover in the end, there exist something, some supernatural unexplained entity that you can name as the god. It’s nothing but you yourself. As I said earlier don’t go by the book rather you write the book that you go by yourself. Break rules, obey no one and listen to nothing but yourself. Do what you feel is right, no matter what religion, the world, protocol or any god damn thing with communication ability tells you. It doesn’t matter how it’s defined now, you can redefine it given that you win. But make sure you win in the end. You can justify it all in the end. I repeat again, you can redefine good and bad. This sounds rebellious, and I know some of you are itching to launch yourself on me, but just think it over again. Define your rules, love yourself, and worship yourself. Someday the world will follow your lead.

SINNER IDEOLOGY...

Ideology

When I was a kid, I use to make paper boats, not the usual ones, use to experiment with them, changed dimensions of its different portions. I use to stare at clouds and find patterns in it, I use to sit and think how world works, I use to question everything. There was never satisfying inquisitiveness burning inside me, I wanted to learn more and experiment with things in order to get deeper understanding, better the existing ones and develop the required the non-existing ones.

And then came college, assignments took place of creative ideas, cramming formulae replaced innovations, learning and experimenting was brutally murdered by mugging, performing in exams was prime aim rather than learning, college trained IT and multinational company slaves who‘d go out and work for someone else, it trained us to obey, learn and do outsourcing rather innovate and develop new technologies. It was breeding ground for future servants rather than future thinkers and scientist.
Colleges and their age old traditions, but traditions of what?
Hazing kids?
And humiliating who tries to think a lit bit different?
Or putting so much pressure on students they turn into these caffeine addict mugging machines?

College system and its mechanism is a criminal. It robs students of their creativity and their passion. And yeah, that’s the real crime.

The true purpose of education is to stimulate the creativity and the passions of the student body, it is to give them wings, to allow them think freely, develop new things, innovate and experiment. Education is that mechanism by which young intelligent minds are converted into mature ignited minds. Does that really happen? I don’t think so, our education system teaches us to roll on, play it safe, graduate and get a job.

You know a lot of people say that college is the time when young boys and girls expand their way they look at this world, when they open their minds to new ideas and experiences and from where they begin that long journey from innocence of youth to the responsibilities of adulthood. But not now….

Now college is no longer a place to learn, you go there single minded with one aim and that is to get a good job with great starting salary. No one cares about new ideas concepts and innovation; all you need to do is cram, mug do well in exams, copy assignments and projects get a good CGPA and fly away with your head held high with some MNC paying you a lot of dollars…

There are very few mechanism prevailing in our present system to support any new idea that any engineering student might come up with even if they are they r not encouraging enough to attract students. There were millions of ides that died before anyone knowing even a bit about them, our professors would definitely agree to this. There has to be so many things that you all must have thought but couldn’t develop those due to loop holes in the system.

Look there are so few truths in this world that when you see one, you know it.
And I know it is a truth, we all know it is a truth that engineering colleges kills innovations Present education system has lead us to a deep crisis. Time for awakening, time for another renaissance else it‘ll be too late.

This story is not about brainy geeks who sit on the 1st bench itching to raise their hand for every question faculty asks; this story is about genius back benchers who with their exceptional IQ find new ways to get earphones inside their ears in the class without faculty having the slightest of hint every day. This story is about those underdogs who take turns in a lecture to sleep, with someone having responsibility of elbowing them every time trouble comes. This story is not about those who give up on their dreams and surrender to dull college system, this story is about rebels who try and change the way system works and in turn get suspended now and then. This story is not about hard workers who toil day and night for a kick ass CGPA, this story is about students who manage to save their asses from getting debarred at the last moment (if at all) and manage to get a ‘D’ somehow, else they calculate the left credits and celebrate the fact that they will still get the degree in 4 years. This story is about the most hated section of college, not because they are bad or something just because they are not like the rest. This story talks about those who spend more time creating groups in case there is situation of a fight and hardly bother about making groups for projects and presentation. And while doing all this we never lost our enthusiasm for learning technology and trying new innovations.
Something snapped inside us when we entered our great institution that we gave up working hard instead started our never ending voyage for fun and thrill that earned us the name SINNERS. We are the heroes of this story, look at world through our eyes, you will enjoy, you will laugh, you will cry, you will have emotions that you never had before and in the end you will become one of us.

My 17th Last Cigarette...

My 17th Last Cigarette
                                                                             -By                                                                                                         Sudhanshu Saxena

“I think I need to vomit.”I said.

Semi conscious, unaware of things happening around me, I was uneasy but at peace. I don’t remember where I was and who all were there with me, walls were blue and there was a fan right above my head going in slow circles, making creepy noises causing my head to throb like my heart. I was constantly telling myself I need to put myself together and somehow reach washroom but my body just didn’t obey me at that time. I mentally prepared myself I will count to 3 and then I will use all my strength to get up. I can do it. I stirred myself up. I started counting.

1…..
2………..

I never counted to 3. I don’t even remember what happened. After sometime I heard someone calling my name from distance. The voice was of someone I know, know very well, I just wasn’t able to make out who it was. I felt a palm on my back, like someone trying to lift me up. I woke up, there was light in the room, blinding white light, but its intensity became lower and lower with each passing second. Within few seconds it was bearable.  It was all blurred the faces around me, unfriendly and bothered. I started searching for my spectacle; it was nowhere to be found. Out of nowhere I started crying, like a 5 yr old kid. I was not sure why I was crying, but my brain had a faint image, a whisker of a memory that I had reminded me that I was in pain and it’s ok to cry. In the midst of all this chaos happening I found my spectacle. There was no one in the room.

“Sud you need to hit the washroom ASAP, get a grip on yourself.” I spoke to myself.

I got up, dizzy and nauseatic, on the verge of breakdown. Everything that surrounded me added a pinch of gloominess to the room. Packed food leftovers were scattered like carcasses of dead bodies, chicken bones and pizza boxes with cold drink bottles inverted creating puddles. The room was like a village that was evacuated on short warning. The stale smell made me feel alive. I used my shoulder as a stand making my body lean against the wall. I switched the light off and stood there for few minutes to regain my composure. I couldn’t move my hands or my legs; they were numb due to no blood flowing in them for a long duration of time because of the awkward position I slept in. As blood gushed in my veins I felt resurrected. I started walking towards the washroom, bumping into walls and doors.

I somehow managed to reach the main hall, switched the lights on after accidently switching on TV. There was a guy sleeping with guitar on his chest in playing position, all strings broken and spread all over his torso. He was a friend of mine; I just couldn’t remember the name. I tried hard but gave up. Brain throbbed with every attempt I made to use it. Right next to hall there was room which had an attached toilet to it.

I somehow crawled my way to the room, switched the light on, a friend of mine was sleeping on the floor with his earphones still on and bed was covered empty pizza boxes. I couldn’t remember his name either, this time I didn’t bother trying. I was in a bizarre state at someplace I can’t recall.

I reached washroom. It was hard to shut the door, I realised after making endless failed attempt. I gave up, for a moment I stood there wondering what am I doing here? I started looking around; there was someone else in the toilet.
There was me, and one other guy i couldnt recognise. His eyes were red, hair all disturbed, with a fresh cut on his nose that bled till it stopped automatically creating a trace of dried blood stream on his cheek. He was staring down at me, with his ghostly red eyes right into mine. He imitated every move I made, and smirked. He stood in the mirror and froze right there. I came closer and closer till I could feel his breath, see pain inside his eyes. I gently took my finger and placed it very carefully on his cut. He smiled. Then very carefully I placed my finger on my cut. He imitated and screamed. So did me. I wanted to exchange places with him. In his world there is no existence of pain. I felt jealous and puked.

I kept vomiting. It was like I kept gaining momentary consciousness to help myself up to the wash basin, vomit, leave the tap on and then go unconscious again.

“I need to smoke” I got up and I found myself sitting in one corner of the toilet. Legs crossed with my thighs touching my chest and my arms gripping my legs close to my body. I got up, splashed some water on my face and turned the tap back off. I stood there by the basin, searching my jeans pocket for cigarette, I took my mobile out in 1st go.
4 Missed Calls
1 New Message.
I decided to read the message 1st

“Its over b/w us, it will b better 4 both of us if u simply accept this.. Plz dnt call again..”

Ah crap! I called her again drunk and doped. I don’t even remember making that call let go the context. But it was clear whatever I was unconsciously trying to do didn’t work out. Be it whining, crying, begging or screaming. Just went all wrong. I decided to check my other pocket. Smoking seemed all the more necessary suddenly. I took the cigarette packet out, there was a paper neatly folded into four equal folds. I started reading it. It had all disturbing stuff written on it. And it ended with-
I Love you !
Always yours.

The cigarette packet seemed less painful. The packet had something written on it in my hand writing.
“Promise me Sud, this is your last cigarette.”
I took my last 17th cigarette out and smoked in complete silence, playing with smoke. I don’t want to get back to reality I thought; I just want to live in the moment, unconscious and unaware of whatever happening around me with no memory what so ever.

Introduction

Few months back when I found myself standing in Vice Chancellors office smiling and VC telling me to pick up a hammer and shatter every glass and destroy every brick of the college I was excited instead of being scared. That was experience of a lifetime. When I walked out of his office with a suspension letter of a week in my hand I promised myself I will write about this. Story needs to be told. And today I am keeping my words. This is work of fiction, inspired by real stories and real people.

This story is not about who give up their dreams and surrender to dull college system, this story is about rebels who try and change the way system works and in turn get suspended now and then. This story talks about those who spend more time creating groups in case there is situation of a fight and hardly bothering about making groups for projects and presentations. This story is about the most hated section of college, not because they are bad or something just because they are not like the rest.

Lay back in the most comfortable position you can, you are not reading a novel instead you are in for an experience.

Prologue
“Do you know what this is?” asked the police officer.

“Sir…..” Anurag began to stammer.

He was tied to a chair so mercilessly that ropes were red as they tore his skin, creating rashes that reached his flesh. He was semi-conscious and semi naked. A light above his head was so powerful that it was sufficient to make anyone dizzy. The room in which we were had its own effect. It was in pathetic state with the floor coming off at different spots. There was a constant noise of dripping from a dirty pot placed in one corner and from sweat that formed a drop every now and then on my chin. A police officer was standing right in front of him with one of his leg placed on chair handle, the other police constable stood at the door scratching his belly; just in case more brutal force was required. I constantly stared at the floor, continuously telling myself it’s just a bad dream Sud, hang on buddy; you will wake up soon and attend Budhiraja’s class of basic electronic devices.

“Zor se bol…” screamed the constable scratching his belly more vigorously. I almost wetted my pants at his scream. I have seen such scenes in Bollywood movies many times but I must tell you being there is entirely different feeling. I felt urgent need to go to toilet. I was praying that they give up after interrogating Anurag and my turn never comes. Where the hell are earthquakes when you need them the most? I wondered.

“Belt sir” Anurag replied.
Act as if you just fainted or something. Don’t reply. He is going to fuck you. He is not a college faculty who will give you fewer marks in internals and let you live. He is a bad ass cop u sucker. He will beat the shit out of you. I so badly wanted to tell Anurag all this. But I resisted the temptation. I decided to pray instead. I was less worried about Anurag’s body; guy is a 6’2” beast. The bastard can take all that beating and still smile 10mins later, I was more worried about my heart. What if I had a stroke? These assholes want to kill all of us anyway; stroke would make the post-mortem and all that forensic bullshit sway in their favour.

I took a moment to look at others who were sitting along with me on that small delicate wooden bench. Daga was next to me. I met his eye; he smiled and winked and winked at me back. What the fuck is wrong with this bastard I thought.

“Do you know if it strikes human skin, it can rip it apart? If you want I can demonstrate.” Said the police officer and started laughing like typical villain of Indian movies. The constable also started laughing. All that laughing was just to create the effect.

“I am going to ask to you all one last time, it will be better for all of if you tell me where the video tape is? I won’t ask again, I will let my belt do the talking.” said the police officer and no one laughed this time.

“Sir I seriously don’t know what you are talking about. I know nothing about any video tape. Please let me go sir please.” Anurag replied.

Police officer had a wicked smile on his face. In a totally unexpected way- ‘BANG !!’. In a quick motion police officer slapped the belt hard on Anurag’s bare chest. There was ghostly silence in the room for 2 seconds and then Anurag groaned in pain. I knew we all are going to die in this room. And we all will be nothing more than a missing report in police files like million others. There are times in your life when you surrender yourself to destiny and accept the fate. This was that time for me. I knew this is my last day on planet earth. I just wanted it to be quick and painless, rather than dying with every passing second.

I no longer felt the need to go to toilet.

THE BLEEDING SUN.....

The Bleeding Sun.

It was a beautiful evening. I sat there, peacefully, all alone by myself with cool breeze touching my skin, I felt divine bliss. A mildly warm rock soothed me as I watched the sun go down. Groups of birds flying, chasing the sun in vain: as if they wanted to say few last words as he diminishes, like a powerless god fallen from heaven and buried deep into the sea. Everything else seemed to be so indifferent about his demise. A pompous and callous lull surrounded the exasperated atmosphere.  A pleasant sight, as you might imagine it to be, he looked all smiling and happy about his downfall.

And then it struck me, I looked at him closely and I saw his pain. He was bleeding painfully painting all the clouds nearby crimson red with his heart crying in excruciating pain. Whining and regretting, with tons of thoughts crossing his mind at the same time, this was not how he always imagined it to be. Helpless he was, had no choice but to cover his pain with a smile. A smile that was good enough to fool everything that surrounded him into believing that he is alright and enjoying every bit of time left. A part of him was furious at everything that existed as their very existence was influenced, helped and carved by him and now that he is going down no one has the time to talk to him, console him, and show him the path as he is wobbling into the wrong one.  I felt his pain, I saw things beyond his outer happiness, his pretentious smile. I could easily empathize.

The sun’s story was similar to mine. When the sun began to rise everyone had high expectations of him, everyone who saw him had very firm belief that it’s going to be a sunny day, he is going to shine, follow the legacy of his ancestors who did it for centuries. As hours went by he proved everyone right, he became so mighty that no one could even face him, his brutal strength influenced everyone and everything. He was a force to reckon with, a factor that counts and gets instantly recognised. By mid-day he was the peak of his power, highest point reachable. He became greedy and started wanting more. What he didn’t realise instead of changing the course to reach more might he should have tried to stay at the top where he was, all powerful and comfortable. He continued his journey and the path he chose lead to his downfall. His descend was so disastrous that he himself was in disbelief. Sea which once use to evaporate into the sky by his fury was ready mouth ajar ready to engulf him with a feeling of victory. Small bulbs and lights that hung insignificantly on the street un-noticed by everyone due to sun’s presence started mocking and laughing at sun for underestimating them as they slowly began to outshine sun. It added to sun’s misery. Those small idiotic lights that were in no way comparable to the sun were doing great in their lives, on a small level though but the sun, he was in ruins. His arrogance was crushed to pieces and his faith in himself was shaken to the roots.

But the sun will rise again, it surely will. Tearing apart this darkness and breaking the jaw of everyone who mocked his fall. This darkness won’t last forever, sun will rise again. It has to, it is destined to. Thought that dwelled upon me was hope.

I was busy soaking the feeling I had as my phone began. Screen flashed
"Mom Calling”

I picked up the phone, talked for a while and felt a million times better. May be the sun is not all alone...

Meeting The Publisher [PART 3 THE FINAL PART]

Meeting The Publisher [PART 3 THE FINAL PART]

Part 3

{For part 1 and part 2 read my previous notes}

So I was in Delhi’s most adventures place for me so far with a weird creature who kept a pack of cigarette in his one pocket and almonds in another, who wore T-shirt, jacket and Jeans to a job which is quite corporate in nature, who can offer a 19yr old cigarette and then after 2 drags can call you an asshole. I wondered if he might be having a tattoo hidden somewhere in that green T-shirt of his or a piercing at someplace which I don’t want to imagine. More or less he looked like a 35yr old college going kid who will roam on streets with his bike, light up the cigarette in style and make rings out of the smoke he exhaled.
‘What the fuck is he doing in this publishing house as publisher?’ I thought.
He was cracking his fingers loudly making annoying noise, and was bending his neck to get it fixed; simultaneously he was smiling and looking at me. That feeling was great. It was like seeing your report card after waking up hundreds of nights before the exams. I wished if I could just photograph him and keep that picture on my study table with caption

“After effect of my novel”

“Wow, that was one heck of a novel kiddo. Looking at you I am still sceptical that you wrote that.”

Ya right, fuck you Mr. Pain In the ass Publisher. I worked for a year to come with that story and that way of writing and this is what my 1st reader which is unfortunately you gave me as a comment.

“Oh C’mon kid, you know I am teasing. So is Aditi your GF now or what?”

“Sir, can we please stick to the novel rather than my personal life.” I was pissed and frustrated, to say the least. This man’s unprofessionalism was going beyond my tolerance.

“Okay then. Have a seat.” And he signalled to the seat in front of his desk.
That entire seat changing request was purely symbolic that some real business deal sort of talk is on the cards. As I got up from that super cosy sofa, I wasn’t able to feel my legs. As blood gushed into my legs I felt as if they were getting revived back to life. It took me 100yrs for that short walk of 5steps; Abhi was busy arranging some papers. As I sat down I noticed he had scribbled on somewhat 10-15 sheets of A4 size paper. God, he was noting down points to tell me at the end of the meeting. He finished arranging them and then faced me arms crossed and with his patent smile.

“So are we good to go?” he asked and I nodded nervously.

“You will not like everything I’ll tell you, but you know what, you must listen to it very carefully.” He said.

‘Oh God! Oh God! This is not going good. This is a disaster’ pessimist voice inside me was getting louder and louder. I almost fainted. I drank whole glass of water kept on his table and made myself strong.

For next half an hour he gave me detailed feedback about my novel. Criticized it very strongly on some points. Praised some parts saying even best in the business can’t pull out something like that. One comment of his was very powerful and I will not forget it all my life.

“You are just 19, your dish has all the ingredients to make it super delicious. Cook it properly kiddo.”

In the end I was very confused. Is he happy? Or he is saying Fuck off in a polite way. He grabbed that expression from my face and understood instantly what I was thinking. So he decided to summarize it for me.

“Listen kid. There are many publishing houses in India that will grab this novel with both hands. Pay you well and make you quite successful in a jiffy. But this novel right here on my computer screen can rewrite history” He took a break to drink water.

“It can?” I asked very politely.

“Yes. I am not looking at 10thousand copies sold or crap like that, I am talking about a million copies and national bestseller and so on. Trust me, its well within your reach. With such a huge target audience and such a youth-oriented story we are talking big kid. Real Big. But the point is your novel is good but it can be made better. Remember the points I told you?” He said.

“Yes, I do” I replied.

“So kid, take some pain and edit it just the way I told you. And for god sakes change the name. Your writing style and that name of your novel will earn you a reputation of an imitator. If you understand what I mean.” He said and he pointed to the photograph of a very renowned novelist of India.

“Looking at your expressions I thought I have nailed it. Are you delusional or an actor or what? I thought tonight I will walk out of this office with a big cheque in my hand. Every time you laughed or screamed my thoughts became firmer. And now you are asking me to rewrite my entire novel the way you suggested me? You gotta be kidding me. I am in JIIT, doing engineering. I hardly get time to get a haircut. (I pointed to my hair) I have a tight schedule to follow. And you want me to rewrite 389 pages of the novel in size 11 font. Are you out of your fucking mind?

Get your head out of your ass Abhi. Thank you so much for your time. Now if you don’t mind I got to go.” I was furious. I wanted to slap him for wasting my entire day.

“Remember what I said. Cook it properly, whole world will witness this magic unfurl.” He said as I slammed his cabin door and stormed out.
It was very cold outside. I hardly could feel my fingers. It was almost 3 am and an auto was hard to find. I waited for 10mins or so but couldn’t find myself an auto.

I decided to walk.

A black Mahindra Logan just stopped by me and window glass lowered to reveal smiling Abhi.

“Need a ride back kid?” He asked. I declined by waving my head.

“C’mon kid, I insist.” He said. I had no choice so I decided to take the offer.
“Where to?”
“Noida Sec-62.”
“Hostel?”
I nodded. I wanted to talk as minimum as possible. I hated that guy now.
“You are angry at me aren’t you? Let me make it up. Come stay at my place for tonight.”

‘No thanks’ was my instant reply in my head but the problem is if I enter college at 4 in the morning, it can cause me some disciplinary pain. Given the fact that I have already messed up with my grades, and once a disciplinary action was also taken against me summoning my parents, bearing this moron was a better choice any day. I nodded.

We drove in complete silence for the rest of our journey. We reached his home in about 20 mins thanks to no night traffic in Delhi. His house was beautiful and artistic work of architecture to say the least, situated in a very familiar place to me Safdarjung Enclave. I stayed there for a year when I was doing my drop year coaching. So I was instantly at ease.

His house was very luxurious. Like the one, they show on TV soaps. The whole house was full of photographs. I closed in a photograph for a better view. It was a beautiful lady holding a guy by his arm. I came closer and to my horror, it was Abhi with his wife. God, the guy is married. Also, there was a school bag on the sofa of his living room. He has a kid too. He is not that young as he seems. I instantly felt sorry for my tone and words that I used for him. But he seemed indifferent. He was humming to himself and was busy taking his shoes off.

“Kid, washroom is left to the stairs. You might want to get fresh.” He spoke with hospitality dripping from his voice.

I came out of the washroom and saw him busy arranging meal on the dining table. My host is a great man, and my guilt increased exponentially.

“So what does your wife do Abhi?” I spoke to break the silence as I dipped my Roti in hot matter paneer.

“Aaah my wife.” He smiled and took a sip from his glass of water.

“Nothing much, she smiles and watches me from heaven as I eat this late night dinner with a guy who is just like me 15years ago.” He said and tore another bite from his chapatti.

There are times in your life when you wish you can rewind your life a few seconds and change what you just did. This one was the perfect example of that. Why the hell my life doesn’t come with a remote which has rewind and fast forward button.

“Oh, I am sorry.” And then I wished I could use the fast forward button to get to the end of this dinner. I wanted more kheer, it was delicious. But I hesitated to ask because of the awkward moment I just had. There was a constant battle between my tongue and my brain. My tongue won in the end and I decided to stretch for it.

“Don’t be sorry kid, I told you na she is smiling. I am happy about it. Wait, let me get you that bowl. Kheer is delicious today. Isn’t it?”
I nodded.

After we had our meal, he got me a nice silky quilt and a soft pillow. I was his fan by then. He was a great guy. My opinion about him oscillated every now and then. I slept in the living room on a cosy sofa. My mind processing whatever happened today. It was one hell of a night. I was tired but still was unable to sleep. I kept staring at all the photographs that surrounded me in that room and imagined their love story. Was it a love marriage? Sure it was. I don’t remember when I fell asleep.

Then dogs started barking. I woke up and scratched my head. I went to the washroom and I heard a kid say-

“Yes Dad, I’ll be nice to him.”
I went back to my sofa to find my spectacles and my mobile, I checked time. It was 7am. I heard Abhi scream.

“Kid, breakfast is ready. Come fast.”
“Dad I am already there. Waiting for you.”
“No I am not talking to you Ayush, I am talking to the other kid in the house.”
Other kid? Ok, he was calling me for breakfast. I replied I am coming.
There at the dining table, I saw a kid 10yrs of age, neatly dressed in school uniform with a bag on his back and a water bottle hanging by his neck. He was playing with the fork and spoon flying them as his aeroplane. He saw me and placed them back on the table instantly.

“Hello Bhaiya, my name is Ayush Shrivastav and I am in 4th standard.”
I repeated all that which his dad taught him to do whenever he meets anyone. The kid was very cute. I shook his hand and replied in the same tone as his.
“Here is your sandwich and omelette. And here is yours.” Abhi placed two omelettes and two sandwiches one each our plates. He was wearing an apron. He removed his apron and sat down with us to eat. Kid was very sweet. He ate it all and then signalled his dad to get his ear near his mouth.

“No you won’t be late son, don’t worry.” He said consoling the kid. He then faced me.

“Will you please excuse us for a minute; we have a school bus to catch.” After saying this he got up and without saying a word more moved out with Ayush.
He returned after 10mins. I wanted to get back to my college; bus takes almost 1hr from Safdarjung. It was best that I leave now.

“Abhi it was so nice of you to let me stay at your place. I am really grateful for your hospitality but I think it's best I leave now. Now you have nailed my career as a writer I have a class to attend at 9. It’s called Data Base Management System. And I don’t know shit about that.” I said and almost regretted the word nailed that I just used.

“Wait. I’ll drop you.” He replied.

We drove without exchanging a word. It was odd. A day before I didn’t even knew anything about this guy but now it’s like I know him since ages.
“I didn’t nail your career Sud, you are an amazing writer and I will stand by it all my life. You need to polish this novel. That’s it. Trust me, anyone who will read your writing would want more and more from you. It’s addictive.” He said and I could see red bricked building of Jiit.

“Think about it Kid, just cook your dish. The World is ready with empty plates. Cook it.”

Car stopped. I stepped out of the car. Said nothing just smiled.
I entered that gigantic metallic gate of Jiit with an even more gigantic question in my mind.

Should I cook it? What do you say?

MEETING THE PUBLISHER.... (PART 1 and 2)

Meeting the publisher.

Part-1

Well to follow a writers protocol I have to declare that this whole incident is a work of fiction and nothing like this happened actually. It’s a story of a crazy night which happened on 17th Jan 2011, when I had this meeting with the publisher of ABC publishing house. Nothing went as I expected and it kind of changed me entirely, changed my perception about writing and I think this particular meeting matured me as a writer and more importantly as a human being.

It took me 1and a half hour (and 350 bucks) to reach the publishing house’s office situated at Ansari Road, Daryaganj. As I stepped out of auto I took a deep breath and checked myself in the shining mirror of the building. I was bit nervous and excited about the meeting ahead. You don’t usually have such situations in life from where the entire course of your life can be redirected. I was busy making myself mentally prepared for the task up ahead then suddenly I heard a voice from behind.

“Bhaiya Ji paise???”

Perhaps the auto wala didn’t understand my situation in any possible way. And I was too pre-occupied to tell him the entire story. I walked up to him and apologised and paid him. I scolded myself for being so nervous, but that didn’t help at all. Few hours and my fate will be decided, I was having so many emotions inside me as I walked inside the building.

The building kind of soothed my nerves; it was very artistic and elegant in its very own way. I checked my watch and it was almost the time for my appointment with the publisher. I went up to the reception to inquire about publisher’s cabin, there was a woman in her mid-40s busy like hell. She had a telephone glued to her right ear with the help of her right shoulder, she was typing something and mumbling so very softly on the phone that it was almost inaudible to me, a pencil was carelessly tucked in her hairs behind. She had a smile on her face that eased me and I had this feeling that its safe for me to talk to her. I wanted to wait for her to finish her call but then I rechecked my watch and it made me slightly uncomfortable, it was almost the time. She was not important in my scheme of things and annoying her wont harm me, I was not there to impress her anyway. I decided to interrupt.

“Excuse me, mam.”

She waved me away with her hand and signalled me to wait for few minutes. I stood there impatient. Those 3-4 minutes felt like a lifetime. I didn’t want to be late, and there I was waiting for her to finish a call. Every min she takes might end up being the difference between my approval or rejection. Then she finally finished her call.

“Yes, how may I help you”

-“Mam, I am Sudhanshu and….” And as I was about to tell what I am doing there she cut me in between,

“Oh, Sir is waiting for you, 1st floor left most cabin” the word waiting made me feel creepy. I thanked her with a warm smile and almost ran my way up till few steps left in his office. As I was about to reach the door of his cabin I revised things that I’d say and things that I have to avoid. I opened the glass door half and asked as politely as I possibly could-

“Sir may I please come in?”

“Oh Sudhanshu, Come in Come in, have a seat.”

Well, to be honest, I was initially surprised to see him, what I imagined was a man with grey hairs, suit tie and boot and a highly professional way of dealing with clients. But this man was different, he was 35 or something, with silky soft hairs, fair, tall and lean, a green t-shirt with a jacket, had a very soothing personality and a smile that can make anyone his friend in a minute or even less. I was instantly very comfortable.

I stepped into his office and sat down on the chair directly facing him. He was doing some files so I took the liberty of checking his office out. It was amazing, the emulsion on walls, the fish aquarium, the meaningless paintings that I never understood, few certificates that boasted how good the publishing house is and few pictures of India’s most renowned novelist who r now a force to reckon with. I almost imagined my photo hanging right next to India’s most loved author; this fantasy was so pleasing in itself that I smiled to myself.

“So Sudhanshu, why do you want to be a writer?”
My smile vanished and I saw him looking at me with a pleasant smile, I felt bad that he noticed me looking at wall photo and smiling like an idiot, the guy must have thought I am nuts. And above that, he asked such a difficult question. Why do I want to be a writer, hmmm let me see; because that’s the only thing I am good at, or I don’t want to be an engineer slave of a multinational company anything else would do, or I love writing and its fun to tell others how you feel and it is so lovely to receive compliments on your writing skills. So many answers I had to a simple one line question but I chose none of them and gave a very stupid stammering answer.

“I-I don’t know sir.”

Crap Sud, you blew it. That was so lame. Now he will say thank you very much now you may leave. But nothing like that happened. He laughed out loud and said

“Easy kid, this is not an interview.”

I am not sure I liked him calling me a kid but that reminded me of someone very close to my heart. My Geet Di use to call me kid. Anyways he closed all his files and asked me plug in my pen drive. I obeyed. He took some almonds out of to his pocket and offered me few, which I accepted. He asked me to sit on a sofa behind while he started reading 5 underdogs. He had a paper on his desk and a pencil in writing position in his hand. And he started reading, with tons of concentration. I sat there on sofa with my eyes buried deep in his face to notice any change in his facial expressions. I was nervous again…
Exactly 37mins into reading the novel he burst into laughter, I was initially taken aback by this but then I mentally hi-fived myself. This is  going great Sud. I messaged the same to my room partner Ishu, who was anxious about how the things are going with me. Then this happened time and time again, cant tell you guys it boosted my moral like anything. 5hrs or so into reading he turned to me with a very serious expression and asked-

“Did this actually happened kid?”

I replied back in a smile…

Part 2

He continued reading, and I immersed my eyes deeper in his face trying to pick up every bit of emotion he displays. I must confess I was getting very positive vibes. It was almost 12 when he got up from his chair arched his back and gave me a warm smiling look. I saw his eyes they were light red and still he wanted to get back to reading.

‘Workaholic’ I thought.
As I was sitting there and watching him unwind himself he abruptly spoke.

“Hey Kid, feel like having a cigarette??”
Oh, crap! Has he lost his mind?

He was offering me a cigarette. I wanted to say ‘no sir, I don’t smoke’ but my body needed nicotine. It was a long hard day, I spent almost 6hrs or so, on a couch and my ass was burning and my back was numb. What smoking has to do with my writing and my novel anyway? Adding to that he was also smoking with me so ‘smoking is injurious to health’ and that entire crappy lecture which one usually bears on DD channel was ruled out from him. Trust me every smoker knows cigarette is injurious to health, and anyone’s dumb lecture on that won’t help.  Like an idiot I smiled and accepted his offer. We walked down the corridor and into the open. He took a packet of Benson and hedges from his pocket and offered me one, I elegantly took one out and he did the same. Then he took a lighter out and like an actor from south Indian movies he lit his cigarette. Well, to be honest I wanted to try his style of lighting up cigarette but I stuck to the traditional way of lighting up the fag. I was curious to know how he knew that I was a smoker. I was a non-smoker and a kind of anti-smoker guy back then when this novel was written. Neither I smoked nor did I like people who smoked back then.

This guy is enigmatic. He knew things about me. I decided to ask.

“Sir, how did you know I smoke?”

He took one deep drag, and when I say deep, I mean real deep, the kind of breath which one inhales on early morning yoga TV shows, hot girls doing pranayama in totally irrelevant type of outfits. He exhaled in style, making rings, and then another ring that passed into that ring. I could feel him easing and feeling good instantly. He was relaxed and calm. Dopamine inside the fag was doing its job instantly. Cigarette rocks if you ask me, scientist should start working on making harmless cigarettes. If cigarettes without the potential hazard of cancer are invented, it’s my strong believe, they can outsell every possible good that humans manufacture and need. I took one drag 1/4th volume of what he took and then stared softly at him for reply

“Kid, you are an engineering student with screwed up grades and looking for an alternate career desperately; surely you do smoke.”
Okay, that was rude. I felt like saying there is a tale behind every D and F grade in my grade sheet and c’mon man I didn’t expected him to categorise every smoker as loser. SRK smokes, Chester smokes, and if one has sufficiently free time he will end up discovering that very successful and established men and women from every possible field smokes. But I wanted to hit him right in his face. How dare he insult smoker fraternity?

“Sir, you are the chief publisher of one of the most renowned publishing house, earning a rainbow. A job that many dream of, why in the world makes you a smoker?”

He burst into laughter in the middle of his drag, laughing and coughing and with his free hand waving the smoke away from his face. BINGO! The punch did hit him hard.

You are one quick witted asshole, aren’t you?”

“Errrr…..” Oh my god, did he just say asshole? What did he have in those cigarettes? weed? Hash? or what? I remembered my 1st time smoking hash when I talked shit all night to my roomie. Then I ended up sleeping on the floor of my room with my shoes as my pillow. I gave my cigarette a long investigative look and then I decided to put it off in a way that he wouldn’t notice. ‘I won’t be writer’ I told myself.

“Oh c’mon kid, you have heard the word before haven’t you. And stop calling me sir; call me Abhijeet or Abhi for simplicity. Sir makes me feel old.”
There was I smoking my favourite brand of cigarette in a totally strange place with a man who is enigmatic, to say the least, who is a bit high after 2-3 drags. ‘Man! I am having the time of my life’ I thought. He continued.
“You know what kiddo; there is a story behind why I smoke. There are hidden skeletons in everyone’s closet. But u should also know, you are here to tell me stories, not the vice versa.” And he smiled as he made one ring of smoke pass into another.

“My cigarette went off; can you light it up again?” I innocently showed him my cigarette, it was like a child showing his mother his broken toy and asking her to fix it. Though my toy was lethal and this mother of mine called me an asshole few minutes ago. We both smoked in complete silence for next 3 minutes and then we walked back to his cabin. An unspoken understanding between both of us, none spoke but both understood every gesture.
He sat down on his chair, went round in circle once and then started reading again. I quietly sat down on my couch and waited for him to finish. I was feeling sleepy, so I dozed off. It’s totally safe to have a small nap. This guy is all cool.
“Oh my god!!”

I heard someone scream. I woke up from my nap in a sudden shock. I was having blurred vision due to the nap I took. I checked around, everything was just fine; Abhi was busy reading my novel. I checked time in my watch, It was 2am. Bad dream I comforted myself. I made myself comfortable on that couch and went back to sleep again. I took one deep breath and then again-
“Fuck !!!”

I saw Abhi was having his hands on his head and he was shaking his head in disbelief.  His eyes were wide spread and he was staring at him computer screen.

‘Oh, I, see, he has reached the climax portion.’ I told myself. Great! Few minutes more. You will have you mouth half open. Eyes full of amazement and shock and then after few more minutes you will burst out laughing with corners of your eyes wet with a small tear drop. And this is what exactly happened just the crying part excluded…
